A Message from Your Cat: Why I Need to Scratch
Dear Keeper-of-the-Food:

Yes, I scratched your precious furniture again. But before you get all huffy, think about it from my point of view. I need to scratch for reasons you just don’t understand.

For example, here are a few things I think about when I’m scratching…

  • This is MY territory and I’m going to make sure everyone knows it!
  • Just woke up. Time to strrrrettcchh. (The drapes are really good for those long stretches.)
  • My nails aren’t looking their best. I need a manicure.
  • I’m so happy (or anxious) I could scratch!

This isn’t something I can keep from doing. I was born like this. So instead of complaining, why don’t you help?

If I’m going to bless you with my presence, the least you can do is give me some good scratching areas. Or do you want me to keep using the drapes? No? OK, I’m willing to give them up if you meet my requirements for good scratching:

  • Make sure whatever you use is sturdy. There’s nothing as frustrating as a post that falls over during a good clawing.
  • I can scratch horizontally and vertically, but I’m not telling you which I prefer. (I can’t make this too easy!) You’ll just have to figure it out.
  • I like to scratch different surfaces too. We can try cardboard, carpeting, wood and sisal.
  • I’m used to scratching in certain areas. If you want me to scratch something else, at least put the new stuff in the same areas.
  • It wouldn’t hurt to put catnip or my favorite toys on the new posts either!
  • Max, the shorthair next door, says his keeper uses double-sided tape (something called Sticky Paws?) to keep him off the furniture. I obviously have a lot more class than Max, so you really won’t need that for me.

These are just my minimum requirements. If you do well, then we’ll talk about the delicious (and frequent!) rewards I’ll need to behave.

Your loving (and sure to be reformed) feline

P.S. If you’re going to Pet Supermarket for new scratching posts, pick up a couple of those yummy catnip toys for me too.
