Are you thinking of adding another cat to your family? If so, then make sure to introduce the “new kid” to your existing cat (or cats) properly.
Here are some tips:
- Prepare a safe place for you new cat, separate from your resident cat’s space, with all the essentials-food, water, litter box, scratching post, toys, and bed. Bring your new cat home to this room, and close the door. There could be some hissing and spitting through the closed door at first as your cats set their boundaries. Rub a towel on each cat, and then let the other smell it; this will introduce each cat’s scent to the other, so that they can become acquainted.
- After a day or so, let them meet face-to-face by opening the door a few inches. Observe their behavior in order to gauge how things are going. Let them explore each other’s spaces by having them switch places-bring your new cat out, and place your existing cat in the safe room for a while. If things seem to be going well after a few days, let them out together under your supervision and watch how they react to each other. There may be some growling and hissing, but if they seem to tolerate each other, praise them both lavishly. However, if things don’t go well, start again, and be patient. Depending on their personalities, cats can become fast friends, but it sometimes takes weeks or months for them to truly accept one another.
