If you think brushing your cat regularly isn’t that important, think again. Brushing is a vital step in caring for your cat.
Here’s why, along with some tips:
- Brushing removes loose hair that cats would normally ingest while grooming themselves; often, this ingested hair causes hairballs, which can cause intestinal problems for your kitty. Proper brushing stimulates a cat’s skin, prevents the fur from matting, and ensures a healthier coat. Regular brushing sessions are also a great time to inspect your cat from head-to-tail, so that you can be on top of any potential health problems.
- While most cats love being brushed, some don’t care for it. If your cat balks at being brushed, take a look at the brush-it could be the wrong type for your cat’s coat. Wire-bristle brushes are good for long-haired breeds, because they penetrate the coat better. For short-haired cats, then a rubber or natural bristle brush is probably a better choice. Keep brushing sessions short at first, being mindful not to brush too hard. And, as always, reward your cat with praise and a treat afterwards.
