FUS includes four associated disorders:
- Cystitis–an inflammation of the lining or walls of the bladder;
- Infection– because inflamed tissue is a breeding ground for bacteria;
- Urethral blockage–a crystallization of minerals in the urethra which block the flow of urine;

Urethral blockage and Uremia are both painful, life-threatening conditions that require immediate veterinary treatment, as they can result in death. Symptoms of FUS include frequent trips to the litter box, urinating in odd places, bloody urine, and straining or crying out while trying to urinate.
