Usually, unless a dog is in a safely confined area, he should be on a leash. But if you’re ready to treat your dog to a doggie park, here are some tips for letting him off the leash:
- Your dog will need all current vaccinations, so he’ll be protected against other dogs that could be ill. Monitor your dog’s location at all times and be sure that you’ve taught your dog to come when he’s called; otherwise, he could get quickly away from you.
- Dogs love to socialize, so make sure you’ve trained your dog in “doggie etiquette”. A great way to do this is by using a retractable lead. This way, you can control the amount of space your dog is allowed to have until he’s ready for complete freedom. Always keep a leash handy in case he needs restraining.
- Puppies should be at least six months old before visiting a dog park; their immune systems haven’t fully developed, so other dogs could put them at risk for illness. And aggressive dogs shouldn’t be taken to parks–even if they’re leashed, they could still harm other approaching dogs or children.
